Responses, Part 23
Should judging in figure skating be examined?

Here are responses to the above question:

When I heard - I was surprised. When I know - I am not surprised. Go Canada go!
Thinh Le
Ottawa.

The sad truth is that there never will be a true Gold Medal winner in pairs figure skating at Salt Lake, no matter how many Gold Medals are ultimately awarded. Sale/Pelletier, Berezhnaia/Sikharulidze and all the fans of figure skating have been cheated by the corruption that has been revealed. Only reform of the system will serve to give their loss some meaning.
D. Theriault

Anything less than the Canadians receiving the Gold is not acceptable. They were robbed, the viewers were robbed, Canada was robbed, we were all robbed. The whole situation is unacceptable and should be taken care of immediately. We are intelligent people, and all who watched the performance saw the same thing. The Canadians earned the Gold. How many times does anyone need to watch the video. Yes, this was a crime. A crime against the spirit of the games. It should become law for every Olympics, if a judge is caught cheating, then their entire
Olympic team will be disqualified and sent home. This would be a high penality for any nation to bare. But it would also wean out undesirable judges. Let this be the last time an incident such as this dampen the spirit of the games.

I think the organizers; judges and the ISU should receive straight 6.0s for buffoonery, charlatanism and lack of integrity. Does no one realize the enormous damage that has been done to figure skating and the Olympic games as a result of what has now been confirmed as an obvious fix? I refuse to watch, and thereby support, any sport where the results have been predetermined. The IOC has proven itself to be an organization " on the take" All levels of organizers of this joke of a winter Olympic should be held accountable. The Canadians won the pairs figure skating gold medal. Only an imbecile would conclude otherwise.
Peter Spitzer

My enthusiasm for watching the sport has declined ever since Nagano. The saddest thing about this recent travesty is that those who are penalized are the skaters, not the judges, while it is the judges who have conducted themselves poorly. While there's been considerable focus on Sale and Pelletier -- and I agree they were robbed -- we shouldn't lose sight of the effect this episode has had on others. What should have been a golden, shining moment for the Russians is tarnished. The American pairs skaters were also shortchanged. The deduction in technical marks awarded to Elvis Stojko in the short program is inexplicable when compared to the marks deducted from Plushenko's score, when similar errors were made. My great fear is that the judges will now retaliate against the Canadians for all the scrutiny and controversy by awarding low marks to all the Canadian skaters competing. Time alone will tell whether the judges and the ISU have enough integrity to restore the honour of figure skating at these Olympics and afterwards.
Lois Toms

I wonder if anyone has thought how the Russian skaters must feel if their judges feel the only way they can win is by cheating. I wonder how many of them are doubting their abilities to win on just their talent. At least our skaters know that if they win they did it themselves.

I don't take WWF wrestling seriously. I am starting to think the same way about figure skating.
