Jean-François Monette, 23, of Montreal will make his Olympic debut in Salt Lake City as a substitute. Monette, the 1996 world junior champion, is in the midst of his second year with the senior national team. He holds Canadian records in both the 1,000 metres and 1,500 metres.

Last October, Monette and teammates Marc Gagnon, Eric Bedard and Mathieu Turcotte shattered the 5,000-metre world record by almost six seconds during a meet in Calgary.
