Athlete Profile

Cindy Klassen, 22, of Winnipeg has podium potential in the 1,000 metres at Salt Lake, she was fifth at the World Cup race in early January. In December, Klassen set a new Canadian record in the women's 5,000 metres at the Canadian Olympic speed skating trials. Klassen, one of the youngest skaters on the Canadian Olympic team, won her race in 6 minutes 59.24 seconds and became only the third woman ever to skate the distance in less than seven minutes. She won a silver medal in the 1,500 metres race at the World Cup last year in the Netherlands. She will be in five events in Salt Lake: the 500 metres; the 1,000 metres; 1,500 metres; 3,000 metres and the 5, 000 metres events. Klassen only started speed skating four years ago at the age of 18, and lists in-line speed skating as something she enjoys when she's off the ice.
