Michael Ireland, 27, of Winnipeg started skating at the age of 5. 2001 was a good year for Ireland: he set a personal best time of 1:08.34 in the 1,000 metres - a world record at the time, and was world sprint champion. Ireland has podium potential in his two events: the 500 metres and 1,000 metres at Salt Lake. In his biography, Ireland says his goal at the 2002 Olympics was "to win a medal," and "go as fast as I can."
