Jérôme Sylvestre, 22, of Bromont, Que., has joined the elite on the World Cup circuit. In January of 2001, he won a race in Kreischberg, Austria and followed that result with a 20th-place finish at the world championships in Madonna, Italy.
Sylvestre qualified to compete at the Olympic Games after placing eighth in a giant slalom race at a World Cup competition Mont Ste-Anne, Que., in mid-December. He then survived a battle with four Canadian teammates for the final three spots available on the men`s giant slalom team (Jasey-Jay Anderson had already secured a berth already). Mark Fawcett and Ryan Wedding also qualified. The selections will be based on a point system comprised of results posted this season and last season. The selection date is in January.
