Jo Hanna from Canada writes: What an odd selection. I guess the Academy thinks comedians are too controversial for these times. Personally, I think the ceremonies have been getting progressively more boring by the year and choosing this hunky host will not likely change that trend.

Gotta love a guy who in summing up his career so far said, 'What other occupation has you brandishing adamanitum steel claws and sideburns then next thing you know you're dancing and in sequins up to your t*ts?'. lol- Posted 12/12/08 at 4:19 PM EDT | Link to Comment

Surley Burley from Windsor, Canada writes: I think Hugh Jackman is an outstanding choice. John Smith, not being a woman, just doesn't get it why Jackman is 'sexiest man alive'.
I think Hugh Jackman will bring some class and elegance back to the Oscars. These qualities have been sadly lacking the past few years. I have not enjoyed the stupid crass jokes on the comedians.
To Prairie Dog. Now that we know your sexy, maybe you can host next year.- Posted 12/12/08 at 4:23 PM EDT | Link to Comment

We would like to nominate this guy down at our gym who wears the same rugby shirt all the time. We don't know his name, but he's really built, and WAY hotter than anyone on TV or film.

Tom G from Canada writes: I guess the question that needs to be asked is where did People magazine get the unqualified right to identify anyone as sexiest this or sexiest that? I'm sure it all started out as a joke and a silly gimmick, but now it carries cache and the bloomin media echoes the sentiment as if it were gospel.

Louisa J from Australia writes: Jackman is one of the nicest guys in the business. Probably better known in Australia and the US than Canada for his acting and entertainment prowess.
Tuning into these blogs sometimes is rather like tuning into an English blog. Something about the grumpiness and mean-spiritedness! If a Canadian celeb had been chosen, would you guys be happy then????/- Posted 13/12/08 at 3:32 AM EDT | Link to Comment

Jim Smith from Canada writes: At the risk of being provocative, can someone explain why we (i.e., the masses) care so much about about the Oscars? It is arguably one of the most indulgent, and consequently grotesque spectacles of celebrity that exists.

Ed Ked from Vancouver, Canada writes: I have nothing at all against Jackman as an actor, a person, or as a host, but, come on, if they want to make the show less boring, the producers are just plain insane to decide to increase the most boring part of the show, the song&dance garbage. The most tedious part of previous shows has been the interminable cheesy musical torture sessions; if anything, the Oscars need a near total song&dance-ectomy, not an increase of that godawful dreck.

Louisa J from Australia writes: Actually Canuck in KL, the news hit the entertainment headlines here for a day, then it (the news) moved on, as it tends to here in Aus. However, this story has been on the front pages of the G&M, for what, 3 or 4 days now. Yes, Jackman is a stage actor first and foremost, with musical theatre his forte, and for those whingeing about this integral part of the Oscars, a simple solution is this--don't tune in and perhaps get some sort of outdoors lifestyle going hey???

Louisa J from Australia writes: Liam Smith, how does this decision make the Oscars suck even more? What is your idea of a not-so-sucky Oscars? An opening and closing segue with a sequence from the Royal Can Mounties? I'm not that keen to know, but really, does anyone truly care??? I mean seriously, some of you take the less important news to heart just a wee bit too much me thinks.

Ed Ked from Vancouver, Canada writes: "some of you take the less important news to heart just a wee bit too much me thinks. "
If that's true, why do you have two posts in a row, overreacting at the people complaining?
i say again, drop the song & dance cheese (which is not at all "integral"), jack up the comedy.
"An opening and closing segue with a sequence from the Royal Can Mounties?"
If that's supposed to be a real insult, you're as ignorant of the Canadian mindset as most downunder tourists I've met.- Posted 14/12/08 at 10:35 PM EDT | Link to Comment

Louisa J from Australia writes: Come on Ed, calm down. I'm simply responding to the overwhelming repository of mean-spirited comments here. It sounds like you're one of the ignoramuses on here complaining about the appointment of Jackman without any knowledge of who and what maketh the man. He's not just a song and dance man, he's also got a penchant for comedy. You could say, he's a JACK of all trades. If Russell Crowe had been the token appointee, I'd willingly offer a negative appraisal. But, Jackman doesn't deserve these ignorant comments.
Your last comment bids me to make an opinion about the somewhat self-indulgent Canadian attitude--the chip on shoulder and desire to prove that you're smarter and better than your neighbours. From what I've read on these blogs, it seems that many Canucks have got a chip on their shoulder about Australia too. I've never come across an Aussie being so insulting and disrespectful of Canadians, as I have of Canadians towards Aussies on these blogs. And, going by some attitudes expressed on these blogs about downunder in general, I'd have to throw the "ignorant" comment back at you. It seems that the colloquial Aussie persona is available for payout at all times, but not the untouchable Royal Mountie or lumberjacker if you like.- Posted 14/12/08 at 10:56 PM EDT | Link to Comment

Ed Ked from Vancouver, Canada writes: Clearly you didn't bother to read my earlier comments. I have nothing against Jackman, he's been funny on talk shows, and if all he's going to do is be funny, I'm fine with that. I just don't like the song and dance portion of the Oscar show, and from what the PRODUCERS have been saying, they're looking to increase this most tedious part of the broadcast, saying "hey let's make the show less boring by increasing the most boring component."
If the announcement had just been of Jackman's appointment without the mention of an increased focus on the song & dance cheesefest aspect, I'd have said nothing.
Also, Insulting Mounties and Lumberjacks is the last thing likely to upset us, as these are not exactly the beloved national mascots you seem to believe they are, which was where the "ignorant" bit came from. There are pretty much no symbolic figures that we hold sacred in the sense that you're aiming for, so, sorry, your entire last paragraph is still pretty much applicable only to yourself.- Posted 14/12/08 at 11:32 PM EDT | Link to Comment

Valkyrie 23 from Guelph, Canada writes: The Oscars are so boring - I'm not sure why anyone watches them. It doesn't make me respect the actor more or make me want to watch a movie. I clicked on this story because it was about the uber-sexy Hugh Jackman, who is my pick as hottest star of the moment, well, him and Jason Statham. Mmm... wolverine and transporter...
Anyways, to jump in and second Ed Ked: I have respect for the mounties as a police force, but in truth, there really isn't a canadian symbol that I cherish and would be offended if it were "insulted." I've seen people replace the maple leaf with a marijuana symbol and that didn't phase me. Lumberjacks? Do we still have those? Why are these strange stereotypes still used as insults?
You two are too funny - made my morning.- Posted 15/12/08 at 8:31 AM EDT | Link to Comment
