Bill Finn from St. Paul, Canada writes: Insightful and incisive, as usual. The reference to 'the audience they created,' captures the heart of the problem Ms.Schneller is outlining. Dumbing down plays well with dummies, no doubt, but some of us want more from film than heavy breathing exercises for bemused teenagers.

Sue Hickey from Grand Falls-Windsor, Canada writes: So true! Hollywood is dumbing down. I hope that Valkyrie bombs at the box office. Kenneth Branagh needs a clang upside the head for agreeing to be in a film created by Bryan Singer as vehicle for midget hasbeen Tom Cruise and billing it as a "thriller" instead of getting a great actor (tall too as Stauffenberg was six foot three not five foot nothing) for the role and telling the story with an element of real human drama - not the "hey dudes let's kill Hitler" plot with a babe added - for example the count portrayed as a tragic hero whose hesitancy on one side and misguided planning on the other led the young man to his execution. But no, idiot Singer, who couldn't even do a good job on Superman, is making a film for mindless American audiences.
I'm thinking, too, about "The Passion of the Christ." I sat because I wanted to see how Mel Gibson told the Christ story. Violent but inspired acting from Jim Caviezel in the title role. However, when it was at the theatre, there were sellout audiences of teenagers. Was it because the teens were religious and loved Biblical fiction? That Jim Caviezel is a good actor and was possibly the sexiest Jesus ever in a film based on the Bible, a good draw for sexed-up teens? No, it's because the youth were more interested in the gore!
Show 'em The Exorcist these days and they think it's funny....- Posted 11/12/08 at 12:42 PM EDT | Link to Comment
