One of the Conservatives' high-profile candidates in Quebec didn't cast a ballot for her party in today's vote.
Josée Verner, the Heritage Minister, voted in a Quebec City riding where the Tories aren't fielding a candidate, even though she could have voted for herself in the neighbouring constituency.
She was unaware that section 10 of the Elections Act allows incumbent MPs to register either on the electoral list of their place of residence, or at their Ottawa office or where they are running for office.
Ms. Verner is running in the Quebec City riding of Louis-Saint-Laurent.
Jean-Nicolas Marchand, a spokesman, confirmed that she cast her ballot in the riding of Portneuf-Jacques Cartier, where there is no Tory candidate.
“Ms. Verner lives in that riding and that's why she voted there,” Mr. Marchand said.
Portneuf-Jacques Cartier is held by the independent MP André Arthur, who often votes along with the Conservatives. The Tories didn't field a candidate against him in this election campaign.
