Hot: Stephen Harper on arts and culture

On the campaign trail in Saskatoon on Monday, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper criticized big arts galas as elitist.

“I think when ordinary working people come home, turn on the TV and see a gala and all sorts of people at a rich gala all subsidized by the taxpayer, claiming their subsidies aren't high enough when they know they have actually gone up, I'm not sure that's something that resonates with ordinary people," he said. "Ordinary people understand we have to live within a budget.”

Meanwhile, his wife, Laureen, is a proud supporter of the arts and is going to the National Arts Centre gala on Oct. 4. (Singer Tony Bennett is the big draw this year.) In fact, she's the gala's honourary chair and has been for several years. And she really gets into it, helping to personally decorate the NAC foyer for the event. She's always dressed beautifully and once again, John Baird, a Tory incumbent candidate from Ottawa and the Environment Minister, has agreed to be her date. Her husband never goes; he stays home and looks after the kids at their taxpayer-subsidized mansion on Sussex Drive.

  2. John Gzowski from Canada writes: Holy cow. Is this column a joke?
Laureen a proud supporter of the arts? Going to see Tony Bennett, old american that he is?
How many rich galas are there in which there are Canadian artists?
How about the Juno's, where the musicians pay $900 to get an award.
Is Harper talking about award shows? Is he complaining that award shows are subsidized and that artists are spoiled whiners, when they could be living off the deli trays?

The average Canadian artist lives below the poverty line, no unemployment insurance, no health plan, no guarantee there is work next month or year and no retirement plan.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Then they should get a job, intill there art pays off.

PS:I did not no artist did not get health care, you know we live in Canada right.
  4. John Gzowski from Canada writes: no, no. I didn't say health care, I said health plan. No dental, no glasses. But mostly no stop to the increasing creeping health charges.

I do it because I love it.
I don't complain about the money (much) but I do complain when people think that artists are 'fat cats'.
  5. bob ward from Canada writes: Hey Jane
Is that subsidized house the same house EVERY Prime Minister of Canada has stayed in???

    just askin

P.S. Keep up the great "unbiased" reporting
  6. Ann Douglas from Peterborough, Canada writes: If it's the cost of childcare that's cramping Mr. Harper's style, a lot of Canadians feel his pain -- both parents and employers alike. You can't go out on the town or make it into the office if you can't find or afford decent child care.
  7. garry heaps from Canada writes: i have a mental picture of steve'r ironing his shirts and folding his sweaters while the mrs. is out partying with the environment minister. lol.
  8. George Tesseris from Toronto, Canada writes: Stephen Harper would screw you and the planet to win this election.
