Heather Johnson: My friend Jan refused to die

Globe and Mail Update

These are recent photos of my friend Jan in Washington D.C.

She has just completed her 10th marathon. She had never run one before when she was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago.

She was told she had a year at best, nothing they could do, go home and enjoy your children.

She refused to die and has endured multiple surgeries, treatments and, most recently, experimental treatment.

She is still here. She is still running.

Jan's note on the photos: Pics from my last marathon ... Just remember it was 80 degrees that day, so if I look happy, I probably just got a free shower from a spectator's lawn hose. Or maybe it was after I picked up the beer at Mile 21.
