THE ELECTION: ELECTION IN BRIEF

Ice jam not enough to keep voter away

Riley Brook, N.B. -- An ice jam blocking a road in northern New Brunswick didn't stop one voter from casting his ballot today.

Bob Bartlett of Riley Brook and a few of his neighbours couldn't get to polling stations because their road was covered in huge chunks of ice.

So Mr. Bartlett hiked past the ice, about one kilometre from his home, while a friend waited to pick him up on the other side.

He says just staying home wouldn't have been the right thing to do.

Elections officials had hoped conditions would improve enough by election day for the people in the area to get out and vote.

However, while flood waters along the road had receded, plows weren't able to clear the ice.

Mild temperatures and heavy rain have caused ice jams over the past week, leading to flooding and road closures throughout the province. CP
