On Tuesday, August 23, 2016 in his 88th year Jack died peacefully at Wellesley Central Place Toronto. Dear husband of Ethel McLellan (nee Moncrief). Father of Susan, (Michael Keith), David and Douglas (Ginger Sorbara). Grandfather of David's children, Geoffrey, Hilary and Caroline, Douglas' children, Alex, Sam and August and predeceased by Susan's Tori.

Jack was born June 11,1929, son of John H. Birkenshaw and Mary McLellan. Predeceased by siblings, Harry Birkenshaw, Isobel Dean and survived by sister, Jean Fennell.

Jack was educated at John Ross Robertson, Lawrence Park Collegiate and Victoria College, U. of T. graduating in Maths and Physics; he went on to complete the requirements to become an actuary and Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

He spent his entire career in the life insurance industry. After 23 years at Confederation Life Insurance Company, he established MONY Life Insurance of Canada in 1973, a new life company and the first to introduce lowered premiums for non-smokers.

He was a member of the Advisory Committee founding the Canada Pension Plan, Past President of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and Past Treasurer of the Society of Actuaries. In addition to his busy career, he found time to chair Mitchell Sharp's leadership campaign in 1968 and lead one of the first Miles for Millions walks in Toronto.

He was an avid sportsman playing football and hockey at University but golf was his passion. A long time member of Rosedale Golf Club, he and Ethel spent many winters in Jupiter, Florida, being members of Jonathan's Landing Golf Club where he was able to indulge his favourite game year-round.

We thank the Wellesley Central Place and the staff there for the excellent care given Jack who was a resident there for nearly three years.

We especially want to acknowledge our gratitude to Myrna Cadiz, his primary caregiver for six years. Myrna's devotion was unmatched. As well Elvie Celestial, Brenda Semblante and Selina Sia all gave Jack special care and attention.

A memorial celebration honouring Jack will take place on September 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Rosedale Golf Club (no jeans please) 1901 Mt. Pleasant Road, Toronto M4N 2W3, 416-485-9321.
