Hospital, after a very brief
struggle with pancreatic cancer,
George Ramsay Cook, born 28
November 1931, Alameda, Sask.
   Beloved husband for fifty-six
years of Eleanor (née Glen)
Dearly loved father of Margaret
(Daryl) and Markham (Vera)
Devoted grandfather of
Katherine and Joshua. Brother of
Luella Moir, Calgary;
predeceased by his brother,
Colonel J. Vincent Cook.
   Professor of History, University
of Toronto, 1958-1968; York
University, 1969-1996; Visiting
Professor of Canadian Studies,
Harvard University, 1968-69;
Visiting Professor, Yale
University, 1978-79 and 1997
General Editor, Dictionary of
Canadian Biography / Dictionnaire biographique du
Canada, 1989-2006.
   A renowned and influential
historian in the academy and the
public sphere, both at home and
abroad, he was an authority on
French Canada and on
nationalism, as well as a
contributor in other areas. He
was the author of twelve books,
several translated into French
and Japanese, and of numerous
articles. Among his many
honours were the Tyrell medal
(Royal Society, 1975); the
Governor General's Literary
Award for Non-Fiction (1985);
Distinguished Foreign Visitor,
Dept. of Foreign Affairs, Japan
(1988); the Molson Prize in the
Humanities and Social Sciences
(Canada Council, 2005), and six
honorary doctorates from
Canadian universities.
   He was Junior Diving Champion
of Manitoba, a swimmer for
eighty years, an avid
birdwatcher, and passionately
fond of visual art, including
Canadian paintings and
Northwest Coast native art.

memory may be made to the
Dictionary of Canadian
biographique du Canada, the
Nature Conservancy of Canada,
the Art Gallery of Ontario or a
charity of your choice.
   A memorial service will be
announced at a later date.
