Stephen David Owens 1956-2016
Stephen died on July 8, 2016, after a long illness. He attended Neil McNeil High School in Scarborough and Centennial College. He worked at Toronto General Hospital and was a union representative there for eight years. He was elected as the NDP MPP for Scarborough Centre and proudly served in the Ontario legislature from 1990 to 1995. He was a parliamentary assistant and then became minister without portfolio and caucus chair in the government of Premier Bob Rae. Later Stephen worked at ACCES Employment Services, helping many professionals new to Canada to find work. He was a dedicated volunteer at many organizations, but especially with the Toronto International Film Festival. For his contributions to TIFF, he won an Ontario Volunteer Service Award in May 2016. In recent years he studied public administration and project management at Ryerson University. Stephen was a member of Windmill Line Co-operative Homes and served on its board of directors. He joined Beth Tikvah Synagogue in 2015. The funeral will be on Sunday at noon, Pardes Shalom Cemetery, 10953 Dufferin St., Vaughan. A memorial gathering will be arranged at a later date; please email to be informed of details.
