HAGERMAN, Edward (Ned) Hayes, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, York University
Surrounded by his loving family, Ned passed away suddenly but peacefully in the earliest hours of Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Toronto General Hospital. Born May 18, 1939 in Zealand Station, New Brunswick, to Howard and Mary Hagerman. Loving partner and best friend of Beverley Fingerhut. Cherished father and stepfather to Lisa Pitel, Jennifer Hagerman, Christopher Chalmers, Natalie Fingerhut and Robin Metcalfe. Grandfather of Raffi, Olivia, Jesse, Joey, Meaghan and Allison. Brother of Ann, and uncle of Eric and Michelle. Predeceased by his first wife, Heather. Ned was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and Duke University. He had a long and successful academic career as a historian, first at Ohio State University, and then at Atkinson College of York University, retiring in 2004 as a full Professor. He was the author of two remarkable works of history. He was a lover of poetry, oft-published himself, and a founder of several successful poetry groups. His many friends and colleagues will remember him as one of the Renaissance men of generation, picturing him with a drink in one hand, while waving the other and talking excitedly and knowledgeably about the topic of the day, from sports to metaphysics. But most of all Ned was a loving, caring, gentle person, always there to help in hard times, to celebrate successes, or just to provide companionship. His love of his family was boundless and unstinting. He is irreplaceable, and will be forever deeply missed, but also always remembered lovingly, and with a smile, by family and friends. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada.
