MCILROY, William John
June 7, 1932 – March 6, 2016
Beloved husband of Ellen (deceased). Loving father of Bill (Nancy), Doug (Tanya), Anne (Bob) and Geoffrey (Margaret). Grandfather to Graham, Lauren, Ryan and Meagan. Loving brother to Beth Lech.
Bill attended University of Toronto Schools (School Captain 1949 – 1950). He studied medicine at University of Toronto, M.D. 1956. Post–graduate work in medicine and Neurology in Toronto, Boston and London, U.K., R.S. McLaughlin Traveling Fellow, 1959-1962. He joined the staff at Toronto Western Hospital in 1962 and obtained his Fellowship in Neurology in 1963.
Bill became an Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto, 1972 and Head of Neurology, Toronto Western Hospital, 1971 – 1988. He was the first Director of the Neurosciences Program from 1985 – 1988 and was appointed Senior Vice–President, Medical Affairs and Education, The Toronto Hospital, 1990-1993. He was Medical Advisor to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 1982-2008 and was Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies, 1989-1995.
A private family service has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Grace Church–on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Road. In lieu of flowers, donations to the MS Society of Canada or Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
