Dr. Donald McGillis
Dr. Donald Thomas McGillis, 84, of Pointe Claire, Quebec, passed away peacefully following a heart attack on February 22, 2013 at Lakeshore General Hospital. Born in Kingston, Ontario, son of Charles Howard McGillis and Mary Elizabeth Purvis, Don spent most of his life in Montreal. He was a brilliant, gentle and humorous man, a skilled bridge player, world traveller, lover of music, especially Richard Wagner, and an avid reader. He was recognized throughout the world for his passion, talent and expertise as an electrical engineer. During his 43-year career at Hydro Quebec, Don was a leader and innovator in the field of power systems technology. His most notable contribution was to the creation of the 735kv line, acclaimed in 1987 as one of Canada's ten most outstanding engineering achievements of the century. Don was a devoted husband of 53 years to Marguerite, proud and loving father to Howard, Louise and Tom, and doting grandfather to Sarah and Jane. He is survived by his loving sisters Joan and Catherine, niece Joanne (Jean-Guy) and nephew Robert (Paula.) The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 26, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Collins Clarke MacGillvray White Funeral Home, 222 Autoroute 20. A funeral mass will take place at St. John Fisher Church, 120 Summerhill Avenue, Pointe Claire on Wednesday, February 27 at 11am.
