Richard Gordon Charles (1944 - 2013)
Rick died peacefully on February 5th with family by his side after a brief battle with cancer. Rick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Pat, and their children Debbie (Jay) Chmelauskas, Scott (Helen) Charles, Tobin Ohashi and Darin (Laura) Ohashi, and his brothers Ronald (Kristina) and Gordon (Jennifer) and their families. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Adam, Ashlee, Audrey, Adrian and Veronica. He will also be remembered by Debbie and Scott's mother, Marilyn. Rick had many close and lasting relationships, which he nurtured and valued. His friends will miss him greatly.
After graduating from UBC (Bachelor of Commerce 1967) he went on to enjoy a successful career in the investment business, working 40 years for RBC Dominion Securities.
Rick loved nature and the outdoors, he spent many happy times with family and friends hiking, cycling, skiing, fishing and canoeing. He was an avid tennis player and will be missed by his fellow players at VLTBC. About his golf……it was a love hate relationship.
Together, Rick and Pat enjoyed many travel adventures. However, Rick was always happy to return to his piece of paradise on the Sunshine Coast, to paint and tend his rose garden, or on stormy days to sit by the fire with a glass of red wine and read a good book.
Having a strong belief in community service, Rick served on numerous boards most notably Vancouver Family Services, Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation, Vancouver Art Gallery and Vancouver Art Gallery Foundation.
Thank you to the staff on the VGH Spinal Unit for the excellent care Rick received and for the compassion and support extended to the family. We are truly grateful for your help and guidance during this difficult time.
A reception to remember Rick will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation or Vancouver Art Gallery Foundation.
