Margaret Cardross le Riche (née Grant) Peacefully on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Sunnybrook Palliative Care.
Born November 21, 1921 in East London, South Africa to Arthur and Amy Cardross Grant, Margaret was the youngest and last remaining of five siblings: Emily, Constance, Percival and John. Devoted wife of William Harding le Riche for 67 years. Dear mother to Jenny (Randy Smye), Robert, Nicole (John Howard), Giles (Rosemary Polczer) and Claire (Alain Rivet). Unparalleled granny to Megan Smye; Jessica (Shiraz Malik), Brendan (Julia Buchanan) and Jocelyn Howard; Grant, James and Michael le Riche; and Philippe, Luc and Pierre Rivet. Great-grandmother to Kiran Malik. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families. Spending her early childhood at an Anglican mission station which her father ran, Margaret relished the outdoors and often spoke of the beauty of Africa. When she went to boarding school at 11, Margaret regretted no longer listening to her beloved mother playing the piano to lull her to sleep. Trained as a nurse, she met Harding when he was a medical student, marrying in 1943. Ten years later they bravely emigrated to Canada with the three eldest children. After moving to Toronto from Ottawa, the youngest pair arrived. A labour activist, musician, homemaker, and supporter of the arts, she volunteered at church as Warden, Sunday school teacher, host to new Canadians and foreign students, and was an ACW member. With great energy, enthusiasm, and stalwart support, she raised her children with gentleness, sensitivity and boundless love. Her example of caring for all was quietly powerful. She faced death as a normal part of life. Many thanks to the palliative care unit at Sunnybrook Hospital and caregivers Natasha and Sharon. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 15 at the Church of St. Timothy, 100 Old Orchard Grove, Toronto at 2 p.m., followed by a reception in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of St. Timothy (www.sttimothy.ca) or a charity of your choice.
