Emily Tatiana Fulton (nee van der Vaart) 1937 - 2013
After a long and brave battle with cancer, Emily passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on February 2nd in Toronto, at the age of 75. Dearly loved wife of late husband Albert and adored mother of Alexander and Nathaniel (Julia). Predeceased by parents Hubertus and Antonina and sister Nina. Soon after she was born in Indonesia the family moved to Holland where her father, an industrial entrepreneur, pursued business interests. Emily had many vivid memories as a young girl during the Occupation. After the war, the family moved to Ottawa, where Emily's father was a diplomat in the Dutch embassy, involved primarily in fostering trade between Holland and Canada, such as the entry of Heineken beer into the Canadian market. Emily had many amusing recollections of growing up, as her parents often entertained at home, and she met many people in political and business circles.
Emily and Albert had a long and loving marriage. So many wonderful trips with the kids, sailing and motorhome adventures, treks to Europe, iceboating. She was a devoted homemaker, volunteer and sweet compassionate soul. Such a patient, generous and forgiving mother and wife. Mom had a delightfully dry sense of humour and always enjoyed a good story. She loved cooking, gardening, old Hollywood movies and all things Dutch.
Emily loved living on the Toronto Islands and being a part of many events, the garden tours, ''Strawberry Socials'' at the Church of St. Andrew-by-the-Lake, and Albert's weekly archives open house. So many wonderful close friends and neighbours, especially Sandy and Vivian, longtime dear friends, who did so much to help Emily in these final years. And the Island community, so many people so generous with their time and efforts. This is a truly special group of people. Offering everything from a steady supply of delicious home cooked meals and helping with shopping to an endless stream of moral support. Her sons will be deeply grateful to the Island community for the rest of their lives.
We are pleased to announce that a bequest is made to McGill University, establishing a Scholarship fund in the Faculty of Medicine in Albert's name.
We are so thankful for all of the exceptional medical attention that Emily received at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre, Dr.'s Cohen, Chan, Chu and Howe amongst others, and all of the nursing and support staff. The CCAC home care workers, and Perram House where she received truly compassionate care and support from all of the wonderful nurses and helpers. We are so grateful to everyone at this amazing place.
A Memorial Service will take place at the Church of St. Andrew-by-the-Lake, Toronto Island, on Sunday February 17, starting at 1:15 pm. (Ferry to Ward's Island leaves City Ferry docks at 12:30 pm) For more information, please call 416-203-0921.
For those who wish, donations to Perram House Hospice would be appreciated.
