Barbara Ruth Dechant (née O'Connor) Was born on March 22nd, 1928 and died on January 30th, 2013, four days after a diagnosis of lung cancer. She leaves behind her loving children, Karen, Brian, Gregory and Gary, her son-in-law Barry Ennis, and three adored grandchildren, Isabelle, Sam, and Julie. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Bill Dechant, who died in January 2000. Barb was one of ten children and she grew up in Toronto during the depression. Although she was a good student, she had to leave high school early to help pay household expenses. Her prince charming arrived in the form of a young lieutenant who came to the Avenue Coffee Shop for breakfast, where Barb worked as a waitress, and pestered her until she finally agreed to go out with him. Marriage followed soon afterward and she became an officer's wife, had five children (one a stillbirth), and set up new households every couple of years, all around Canada, in Germany, and in the US. In later years, once the kids had left home, she went to work in retail, demonstrating her talents as a first-class saleswoman of fine porcelains and giftware. Barb was an unsentimental pragmatist. She was also a slender, long-legged, raven-haired, blue-eyed Irish beauty who loved to socialize and dress in stylish clothes, which she never paid too much for. She will be sorely missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved by her children and grandchildren. A private service will be held.
