John Morley McInnis
1926 - 2013
Past V.P. of Empire Life Insurance Co.
A True Gentleman
John passed away peacefully at Briton House on January 29th, 2013. John was the loving husband of Patricia ( deceased 2011) for 62 years. He was the father of Susan ( John Simonton), Thomas ( Louise Shurrock), Ann ( Jim Degeer) and John ( deceased). He was Grampa to Brett ( Dave Edwards), Bill, Ashleigh ( Paul Roach), Tom , Reid, Sean, Simon, Emily and Bonnie. He was Great Grampa to Chelsea and Victoria Edwards.
John and his wife grew up in St. Marys, Ontario and moved to the Toronto Islands for their honeymoon years and later to the Islington area of Toronto. John was a good father. Every winter he would flood the side yard for a hockey and skating rink taking great pride in the quality of his ice. No need for a Zamboni, just a light spray of water at 5am on a cold January morning. He coached in the local baseball league often agonizing which lucky player would play right field for the game. The grass on his lawn was like Augusta, smooth and weedless. We had to watch our divots. We all remember fondly our annual summer vacation to Nags Head, NC when it was just a quiet beach town on the Outer Banks. John and Patricia travelled to many varied and interesting places collecting life long friends along the way. John liked to play bridge, golf, pool, blackjack, go fishing with his friends and do cryptic crosswords. He was rather good at all of them. He will best be remembered for his sense of humour. He liked to make people laugh. The care givers at Briton House found him entertaining until the end. His last words to one of them was '' No need for that tonight, my taxi is coming shortly''. It did. Although John rarely spoke of religion he felt very assured that his beloved Patricia was waiting for him.
John loved life and all that went with it; Wine ( beer and whiskey), Women ( Patricia) and Song ( baritone). The sun was always over a yard arm somewhere. John will be dearly missed by all who knew him especially his children who loved and respected him. He had a profound influence on their lives. We would like to thank the caregivers at Briton House who looked after John the last few years. They were always kind, caring, cheerful and helpful. You know who you are. God bless you.
A Memorial gathering for John and Patricia will held in the near future. Plans will be announced in the next few weeks.
