REV. DR. ALAN McLACHLIN Passed away peacefully at Lisaard House, January 29, 2013 in his 87th year. Alan is survived by his devoted partner Gordon Boyd, father of Stephen (Sheila), Thomas and Kathy (Greg). Proud grandfather of Rory, Ellie, Sarah, and Jericho. Dear brother of Jean (Jacques). Survived by his sister in law Margaret.
Predeceased by his parents James and Fannie, his brother Jim, son Martin James, daughter in law Brenda and wife Patricia McLachlin.
Born March 4, 1926, Alan graduated from Victoria College, University of Toronto, in Philosophy and English in 1949. Emmanuel College theological studies Th.M. 1952. General secretary of the Student Christian movement 1956 -1961. In 1961 he joined the United Church Training School (Covenant College), teaching Systematic Theology, in 1964 he received a Rockefeller Doctoral Fellowship to pursue his doctoral studies further. He was subsequently awarded a Th.D. from Emmanuel College.
In 1965 he became the second Principal of St. Paul's United College at the University of Waterloo. In 1977 he left St. Paul's to work in the University's new English Language Proficiency Program.
Alan loved colours, he was an enthusiastic gardener, raising over 40 varieties of Iris, an established painter and teacher of watercolours. He exhibited at Stratford and in Waterloo.
His leisure time for 40 years was spent at his cottage on Lake Conteau, and later in Bayfield on Lake Huron.
Others thought of him as a biblical teacher in adult study groups. An active member of Parkminster United Church, he was an interm minister and later minister emeritus. He was also an active participant at Westminster United Church.
Alan's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A memorial service will be held at Parkminster United Church, 275 Erb St. E., Waterloo N2J 1N6, on Saturday, February 2 at 3 p.m. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation, Lisaard House, or the charity of your choice.
