SUSAN DOUGLAS RUBES March 13, 1925 - January 23, 2013 Died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday January 23.
Beloved wife of the late Jan Rubes (2009) and much loved mother of Jonathan (Judith), Tony (Brenda) and the late Christopher (1996). Inspirational grandmother to Morgan, Colin (Claudia) and Jasan. Also survived by half-brothers, Clement Weinberger (New Jersey) and Mirek Burstein (Czech Republic) and their families.
Born in Vienna, Susan emigrated to New York with her mother Charlotte in 1939, where she became an acclaimed Broadway, radio and film actress and had a starring role on the Guiding Light for 10 years.
To Susi, her family was important beyond all else. Yet, she still made time to found Young People's Theatre, head up CBC Radio Drama, be the first President of The Family Channel, and receive the Order of Canada and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from University of Toronto. She was also an avid tennis player at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, an enthusiastic bridge player, and, with Jan, was a founding member of the Georgian Bay Golf Club.
Family, friends and co-workers knew it was impossible to say no to her. We will all miss her energy, guidance and vivaciousness very much. We invite you to share memories and condolences on Susan's online memorial book www.memorialebook.com or send to firstname.lastname@example.org or in person in the memorial book in the lobby of Young People's Theatre. Donations to Young People's Theatre or The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mt. Sinai Hospital will be gratefully received.
