David L MacIntosh
Toronto Orthopedic Surgeon
6 June 1914- 12 Jan 2013

David passed away peacefully on Saturday in his Toronto home, surrounded by family. He is predeceased by Elaine, his wife of 62 years and will be greatly missed by his children Doug (Judy), Ian (Jane ), Ann (Bawn); his grandchildren Davin (Alexis), Brendan (Amanda), Timothy (Shelley), Alex, Kayleigh, Jason, Shaun; his great grand children Ursula, Owen, Kieran, Micayla, Reid, Jude; and by his sister Marjorie Cushing.
David was born in Nova Scotia and was educated at Dalhousie University. He came to Toronto in 1939 to extend his medical studies. During WW2 he was seconded by the British navy to work with the famous Haldane on underwater diving physiology, and then as a medical officer on the convoy escort ship Philante from 1941 to 1944.
After marrying Elaine in Annapolis Royal they returned to Toronto and David began a 50 year career as a pioneer in the new specialty of orthopaedic surgery. He developed several landmark procedures that helped thousands of people with arthritis and injuries to bones and tendons. Dr. Mac began to work with young athletes in the 50's at the University of Toronto Hart House, becoming physician for the varsity football and hockey teams for 25 years. As a teaching professor he deeply influenced three generations of medical students and surgical trainees.
David and Elaine were patrons of the arts from their early years in Toronto, being regular guests at opera, ballet and symphony. He was a natural conservationist long before it became a public concept, and infused this value into his children and grandchildren. He was a philanthropist to many organizations throughout his life.
The family would like to thank his loving caregivers Mely, Angela and Yolanda who helped him to enjoy a wonderful quality of life in his last 7 years.
A memorial service will be held at Rosedale United Church on Friday January 18 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations are encouraged to the David L MacIntosh Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of Toronto, a centre for excellence in treating musculoskeletal injuries.
