JOHN STUART GRANT Q. C

(September 29, 1919-
January 6, 2013)
On January 6, 2013 in his 94th year, John died peacefully at his home with family at his side and surrounded by prayer. John was the last surviving brother in the family of his beloved parents, George and Genevieve (nee O'Neill) Grant. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was predeceased by his dear wife and best friend, Yvonne (nee Rumfeldt) on January 13, 2011. The loss of Yvonne, after 68 years of marriage, was profoundly felt by John. He was the beloved father of Mary Ann (Michael McCloskey), John (Pauline) and Steven. Cherished Papa John of Deborah McCloskey (Roland Sing), Michael J. McCloskey (Rachelle), and Paul McCloskey (Debra); and Stephanie Grant (Brad Pallister), Kieran Grant (Corinna Allen) and Melissa Grant (Kirk Hargreaves). Treasured Great Papa of Mary Ann, Catherine and Isaac Sing; Madeline, Michael, Sean and Erin McCloskey; Carmen McCloskey; and Isobel and Hamish Grant. Predeceased by his dear sister and brothers, Helen (the late Howard); William (the late Patricia); Robert (the late Margaret); George (Peggy); Alan (Barbara). He is survived by his dear sisters, Gwen Tate (Richard), Nancy Ready (the late Charles) and Phyllis Lavelle. John was a distinguished lawyer, a proud veteran (Captain, Royal Canadian Artillery), gifted track athlete with many medals and awards extending into his senior years, kind mentor, wise and constructive board member, highly respected former Chairman of the Toronto Sun, and a man of faith who generously gave his time to the Knights of Malta and was awarded the Grand Cross in recognition of his efforts. He will be greatly missed but forever lovingly remembered by his immediate family, his extended family of Grants, Langs, Tates, Readys and Rumfeldts, including his many nieces and nephews, especially Christopher and Michael Lang and George Grant. The family is most grateful to John's friend and care-giver, Dolly Chan, whose love, devotion and friendship were vital to his life. We also appreciate the loyalty and support of Bernadette Bandoc and Mimi. We mourn the loss of a true gentle and loving man. The family of John would appreciate donations to the Mackenzie Health Foundation - for use in Palliative Care, 10 Trench Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario, L4C 4Z3 in the memory of Yvonne Grant. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 10th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 11th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church (39 Green Lane, Thornhill, ON, 905-881-2786). Reception to follow in the church hall.
