JOHN CHESLEY BERRINGTON SMITH It is with deep sadness that the family of John C.B. Smith announce his passing on January 2, 2013 in the Palliative Care Oncology wing, St. Catharines General Hospital. Born in Toronto, November 14, 1933, John was the youngest son of Gordon Lindsay Sturrock Smith and Edith Rae Junkin. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert, Flight Lieut. RCAF (1944) Ross (1946) and Lindsay (2006).
Loving and dearly loved partner and best friend of Marilyn Dickinson (nee Gray). Dear Dad to Rob Howarth (Marilyn) and John Howarth (Suzanne). John will be fondly remembered by Jeff and Lynn Dickinson, Michael Dickinson and family and as a much loved Grandpa to Emily and Sarah Dickinson and to Sasha, Dylan and Adam Tate-Howarth. He will also be fondly remembered by David and Vicki Smith, Gurnee and Simon Jensen, Shane and Melanie Smith and by cousins and many friends. John was a long-time employee of Imperial Oil, out of North Bay, Ottawa and Toronto. He still enjoyed golf and swapping stories with some of his Esso friends every spring and fall in Muskoka.
John and Marilyn shared so many happy times in their years together - renovating their new home, enjoying a new life together in Niagara with all it has to offer including trips to wineries, lunches and dinners at local restaurants and patios. Active membership in the Niagara Branch of the International Wine & Food Society helped them to make many new and lasting friendships. As members of the Shaw Guild and avid fans and patrons of the Shaw Festival, attending all of the plays every season gave great enjoyment, as did being members of Stratford Festival as well. Travel included trips to Western Canada to visit friends and family as well as marveling at the scenery, escapes to Marco Island and Sanibel, Florida, Bermuda and the United Kingdom. A very special trip in 2008 was sailing on the Queen Mary 2, from New York to Southampton, on to Paris and Burgundy and then back to England to visit family and to celebrate John's 75th Birthday at the 75th Anniversary dinner of the IWFS at Claridges in London. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas Anglican Church (99 Ontario Street, St. Catharines), on Saturday, January 12th at 1 p.m. In memory of John donations to the Walker Family Cancer Centre, St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation, PO Box 3018 Station Main, St. Catharines, ON L2R 9Z9 would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Butler Funeral Home, 33 Duke Street, St. Catharines (905-684-2334). Online condolences may be made at www.butler-duke.ca.
