MARY CHRISTINE SHORTT
1919 – 2013
Born at Olds, Alberta in 1919, Mary died on January 3, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Predeceased by her father Rev. James Shortt; her mother Christina Shortt; and her brother Judge Edward Shortt. Survived and greatly missed by her longtime companion Barbara West; her niece Janet Shortt; her nephews His Worship Justice of the Peace James Shortt and Dr. Samuel Shortt (Dr. Maria); and her great nephews Michael and Charles Shortt. Mary was a graduate of the University of Toronto, the Ontario College of Education and the Sorbonne. She lived in London, Paris, and New York, returning to Canada in the early 1960s to join the Toronto Public Library system. She subsequently became Chief Librarian at the Ontario College of Education, a position she held until 1989. She was a voracious reader, an enthusiastic gardener, and a dedicated University College alumnus. In later years she became a well-published and recognized authority on the early history of theatre in Canada. Donations in her memory may be made to the University of Toronto.
