Ruth Stephenson (nee Linklater)
Peacefully departed this life on Dec. 29, 2012 in Victoria B. C. She was born in Noranda, Quebec in 1928 and left for boarding school in Toronto followed by an undergraduate degree at Trinity College in the University of Toronto and a teaching certificate. In 1951 she married the Rev Richard Stephenson (pre-deceased) and followed him in his ministries to Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1958 they moved to Vancouver Island and started a family: Jennifer, Greg (Paivi), Tim (Kathy) and Colin (pre-deceased). She was beloved 'Nana Ruth' to Princessa and Mwinyi Topping, Mathew, Chloe, Aidan and Seamus Stephenson, Sophia, Simon and Anna Stephenson. Behind the forceful personality of Richard stood the compassion and dignity that Ruth brought to every situation. Many people would pass through their large house and Ruth provided a sanctuary that would touch many lives. In the past five years dementia claimed her memory but never altered her optimism: if the sky was not blue it was because the flowers needed the rain. Many thanks to the staff at Sunrise and Christchurch Cathedral (Victoria) that cared for her. Funeral service will be held on Jan 3 at Christchurch Cathedral at 1:00 pm with reception following at the Cathedral. Please consider a donation to the Anglican Council of Indigenous People in Ruth's memory.
