WHELEN, Dr. Warren Shore MDCM, FRCP
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Warren Shore Whelen on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 in London, ON. Born in Toronto in 1927, he was predeceased by his parents Alma and Morland, and by both of his brothers, Peter and Donald. He loved Cathy, his wife of 58 years, who has always been at his side, and their four children and families who are scattered across Canada: Doug & Lyn in Parkhill, ON (Christyn, Kate, Kesia, Jade); Dave & Tammy in Clearwater, BC (Dallin, Jairus, Lachlan, Keanen, Annie & Eliana); Jane & Brian in St. Thomas, ON (Jared, Haley); Julie in Winnipeg, MB. He attended McGill University, graduating with his MDCM and went on to earn his FRCP in Paediatrics. He was on the Clinical Paediatric Teaching faculty at the University of Western Ontario for 30 years. He enjoyed private practice in London, ON, teaching and the organizational side of medicine. He was president of his medical fraternity at McGill and president of the Academy of Medicine of London & Middlesex when fluoridation was a contentious issue. Warren's training years led to many exciting venues: Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto) where he met his wife; Children's Hospital, Birmingham, England; Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, and a summer at the Children's Hospital, University of Lyon, France. His wife and 4 children joined him for this memorable summer in France. Summers at the cottage on Horseshoe Lake, in Haliburton (built by his parents in 1937) with his children, grandchildren, their friends and pets were special times. Warren was very pleased by his ability to enjoy a fully active lifestyle and many hobbies including woodworking, photography and bridge. Cardiac problems in recent years curtailed his enjoyment of these activities. Cremation has taken place and he will be buried at the 12 Mile Lake (United Church) cemetery near the cottage. Visitation on Sunday, January 6, 2013, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, London. Private family memorial service at later date. Memorial contributions to the Children's Health Foundation, London, Ontario would be gratefully acknowledged.
