LeFORT, Monsignor Joseph E.

Monsignor Joseph E. LeFort passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in Calgary.
Monsignor LeFort was born and brought up in Medicine Hat, AB, graduated from St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, and was ordained a priest at St. Patrick's Church, Medicine Hat, AB by Bishop Francis P. Carroll in l945. He served in many pastoral, charitable, educational and administrative positions in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary for over sixty years. Monsignor LeFort also served in the wider community as the first national president of the John Howard Society, and he also served as a member of the board of the Canadian Mental Health Association, and on the board of the Providence Care Centre in Calgary. He was an avid Bridge play and reached the status of Grand Master. He was also a great supporter of St. Mary's University College in Calgary. The LeFort Centre on campus is named for him. Monsignor LeFort is survived by two sisters, Philomena Whitesell of Washington, D. C, and Theresa Litschke of Calgary.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral (219 - 18th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 10:30 a.m.
