JULIA M. BECK (NÉE LANGLEY)
Born 1928 in Sydney, Australia, of parents Alfred and Edith Langley, educated at Presbyterian Ladies College, Sydney, and University of Sydney, B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology and Mathematics (1949), Graduate student Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, University of Cambridge 1951-1953; M.A. Urban Geography, UWO, 1980. Worked for Bureau of Mineral Resources (Geology Survey) in Sydney setting up an index to publications on geology in N.S.W. and later, in Canberra, as a petrologist. Very much involved in the conservation movement and in New St. James Presbyterian Church as an Elder. President (1992-94) of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO); past Chairman of LACAC London; co-editor of Brackets and Bargeboards; co-convenor of a number of ACO conferences including Vernacular Architecture in Ontario (1992), Conserving Ontario's Towns and Neighbourhoods for the 21st Century (1993); received many awards for her work in heritage conservation including the Lieutenant-Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Lifetime Achievement (2007), and Achievement Award from Ontario Heritage Foundation.
