Frederick Lewis Stevens

Frederick Lewis Stevens, beloved husband of Joyce Flood Stevens and dear father of Pam (Stevens) and Sheila (Goucher), passed away in his sleep early on December 9, 2012 at the age of 96. Fred was in Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital during a brief illness. Fred was the loving grandfather of Jennifer and David Johnston and Ben and Sam Goucher. He was predeceased in 1965 by his first wife Mabel Helen Gove, mother of Sheila and Pam. Born in Toronto in 1916, Fred attended Harbord Collegiate then worked for a trust company until he joined the RCAF where he served during the Second World War. After the war he attended University of Toronto, graduating with a Master's degree in Social Work, and worked in that field including at the Addiction Research Foundation and Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital until his retirement at 65. Throughout his life Fred enjoyed the outdoors: swimming, hiking and cross-country skiing. He was a long- time member of the Bruce Trail Association and supporter of wildlife preservation. Fred enjoyed music and theatre and he and Joyce were members of the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. He was a good friend to many, kind in nature and a gentleman to the end. The family wishes to thank Birchmere Retirement Residence staff, the care team at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, floor S-2 and Dr. J. Lowry for their care and support of Fred. A funeral service for Fred will be held on January 4, 2013 at 3 p.m., at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel in Toronto with Reverend Terry Bennett of St. James Anglican Church in Orillia officiating. Visitation with family is from 2 p.m. and a reception will follow at the Chapel at 2357 Bloor St. West, Toronto, tel: 416-767-3153. Donations may be made in Fred's name to St. James Anglican Church or Soldiers Memorial Hospital, both in Orillia.
