FARRELL, Joseph P.
Joe died suddenly in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, December 8th, 2012 with his family by his side, aged 73 years. He is survived by his mother, Agnes; wife Joan; son Michael, daughter-in-law Catherine Richens and granddaughter Mabel Ray; daughter Jennifer, son-in-law James Cordon and grandchildren Guinevere and Gavin. Born in DeKalb, Illinois, he received his Bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and his Ph.D. from Syracuse University. Among his many accomplishments, he was Professor Emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, where he was the founder of the Comparative International Development and Education Centre (CIDEC). He was a top consultant with U.S. AID, CIDA and the World Bank. He was a Past President of the Comparative and International Education Society and a member of the Education Sub-Committee of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He travelled, taught and studied extensively with particular interest in Latin America, notably Chile where his work was recognized officially by Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle. He was involved in scouting most of his life, he loved camping and folk music and played a large role in the Leaside community for decades creating a legacy of kindness and sharing that lives on today. His knowledge, wisdom, humour, leadership and love are treasured by all. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14th. A memorial service will be held in LEASIDE UNITED CHURCH, 822 Millwood Road on Saturday, December 15th at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall.
