ARTHUR CHARLES PAPE
Died on Thursday December 6th surrounded by family at The Kensington Hospice in Toronto. Arthur was born on April 3rd, 1942 in Toronto. He grew up with his older sister Carolyn, and his younger sister, Audrey. After their mother's death his father married Lee Soboloff. Lee's children Michael and Joan joined the family. Arthur was a lawyer who spent most of his career fighting for Aboriginal and workers' rights across Canada. From a young age he fought for social justice and peace. After spending his early career as a teacher and journalist, Arthur went to law school in 1976 so that he could further his commitment to social justice and Aboriginal issues. Arthur and his best friend, Rick Salter, started the law firm Pape and Salter in 1982. Jean Teillet became a partner and the firm is now Pape, Salter and Teillet. Arthur represented Aboriginal people in several provinces and territories and argued many cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. Arthur married Maxine Thomas in 1968. He raised her daughter Lisa as his own and together they had Jada and Josh. The marriage ended in 1995. In 2002 Arthur married his high school sweetheart, Judith Hashmall. He was embraced by her family and friends who felt incredibly fortunate to have Arthur in their lives. Arthur will be greatly missed by his wife Judith Hashmall, Carolyn Pape Cowan and Phil Cowan, Audrey Cole and Allan Kennedy, his children Lisa and Clint Dafoe, Jada Pape and Josh Pape, and his grandchildren Sarah, Nora and Clayton. He will also be missed by his stepchildren Daniel Copeland and Joanne Terrence, Jeremy Copeland and Anna Wieselgren, Lia Copeland, and his step-grandchildren Jesse, Cara and Logan. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Church, 175 St. Clair Avenue West on Monday December 10th at 1:30 p.m. Information about shiva will be provided at the memorial.
