MARSHALL, Jeffrey Gordon
1944 ~ 2012
''We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.' Jeffrey Gordon Marshall was a man with an extraordinary spirit. He experienced several different lives during his relatively short time on this earth, none more fulflling than the past two decades when he was able to turn devastating loss into a period of creativity, adventure and personal enrichment.
He was a man of character, grace, courage and strength with a tremendous capacity for love. His great humility allowed him to identify and connect with everyone he met, and the sincere empathy he had for others and the honest way in which he dealt with people extended into every aspect of his life.
Jeff led by example and was often described as heroic, though he never saw himself that way. As one friend said: part of his heroism was his generosity, grace and humour in the face of adversity.
In some ways Jeff's early years were predetermined: he graduated from Queens University as a Civil Engineer, entered the family business, Marshall Steel, and earned an MBA at McGill University, all while balancing the pressures of work, school and a rapidly growing young family.
At the peak of his profession, a series of colliding incidents resulted in the loss of his business, his home and his marriage. Jeff was personally and financially crushed but his spirit prevailed. He rebuilt a life of great accomplishment personally and professionally. He remarried and enjoyed remarkable relationships with his wife, children, family, friends, and associates, all of whom admired and loved him.
He understood more than anyone how critical it is to ''never take away anyone's hope; it may be all they have left''. And he knew that there is hope even in death, hope in the hereafter. His family takes comfort in knowing that Jeff is a great soul, that his spirit lives beyond his physical state - and that we'll speak often...
Deeply missed by wife Nancy Smith; four children Stephen (Gaya), Emily-Jane, Patrick (Kate), Christopher (Melissa); mother Dorothy Marshall; two sisters Jill Paton (Andrew), Joni Redpath; stepchildren Crystal (Jim), Jarett (Angela); and eight grandchildren.
