Gordon Machen, 88, of Toronto passed away at Toronto General Hospital on November 12 from cancer. Gordon was born in Toronto and raised in Canada and England. At age 18 Gordon joined the Royal Air Force on active duty as a bomb aimer and later navigator on Lancasters from 1942 to 1945. After the war he returned briefly to Canada, but military life beckoned and Gordon returned to the Royal Air Force serving during the 1948 Berlin Airlift. It was during this time he met his wife, Margaret Ewen whom he married at RAF Changi, Singapore in 1950. Gordon continued his military service with the Royal Air Force until 1972 attaining the rank of Major. He then pursued his second career as a Certified Management Accountant specializing in audit. After several yeas in the private sector, Gordon ended his working career working for the Office of the Provincial Auditor of Ontario retiring in 1988. In retirement he volunteered with Kiwanis, created beautiful stained glass work and studied genealogy. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Gordon will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughters Carole, Pamela, Wendy (Doug) and twin grandsons Grant and Cameron. Thank you to the staff at Toronto General for their compassion during Gordon's final days and thank you to the caring staff at The Dunfield Retirement Residence for their compassion and support while Gordon called The Dunfield his home. Cremation has occurred. If you wish, donations can be made in Gordon's name to Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services who enhance the moral and welfare of the military community at www.cfpsa.ca.
