SMITH, Alfreda Evelyn (nee Virgo)
Peacefully at the Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, ON, on November 7, 2012, in her 81st year. Freda, beloved wife, companion and best friend of 56 years to Alan. Loving Mum of Janet Mullins and her husband Dave of Ottawa. ON and Jeff Smith and his wife Angela of Newmarket, ON. Cherished Grandma of Ariana, Laura, Cassandra and Heather. Loving sister of Susan Hannon and her husband James of Parry Sound, ON and the late John Virgo. Freda will be sadly missed by her niece, nephews and friends. Born in Sturgeon Falls, Freda attended Parry Sound High School and the Victorian Hospital Nursing School in London (Class of '54). After post graduate studies at Montreal Children's Hospital, Freda joined the Department of Northern Affairs in Great Whale River, Quebec where she worked with the local Eskimo and Indian children. It was there that she met her future husband Alan who was working for Bell on the Mid Canada Line. After their marriage in 1956, they settled in St. Bruno, Quebec and Freda selflessly stayed home to be a full time mum and surrogate nurse for all the neighbourhood kids. From Montreal they moved to Toronto and finally to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. On retirement, Freda and Alan travelled extensively, first with a motor home in the States and then throughout Europe, Asia and Africa; finally settling in Kingston where Freda would spend her summers at the cottage reading and watching, with pride, her young grandchildren blossom into the young ladies they are today. A celebration of her life will be held next summer at the family cottage. As expressions of sympathy, donations in Freda's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
