MERRICK, Thomas Ralph
Nov. 16, 1939-Nov. 2, 2012
Passed away suddenly in his 73rd year of congestive heart failure.
Tom was the beloved husband of Susan (nee Coons), his wife of 33 years, a proud and loving father of Cheryl Hayes (Kevin), Tom Jr. (Roberta), Troy (Hilary) and Todd Russell (Shannon), adoring ''Papa'' to his grandchildren, Adam, Kristine, Rebecca, Matthew and Carly. He will be missed by his brother Gord (Jan), sisters Dee Dee (Jim), Janice (Rick), his west coast nieces and nephews and in-laws, Bev and Bill Don, Mark Coons, Lorne and Erin Don.
Tom moved with his mother and brother from Schumacher, Ontario to Toronto. He attended York Memorial Collegiate where he played football. At age 22, with three young children, he gave up his semi-pro football career with the Oakville Black Nights and embarked on a career in real estate that would span almost 50 years. As a member of the Toronto Real Estate Board, he held senior positions at a variety of firms including Shoreline Cottageland, Young & Biggin, Guaranty Trust Realtor, Connell Real Estate and finally Remax Ultimate, where he worked until the end.
Tom was always busy giving back to his friends, family and people who were less fortunate than himself. Whether working as National President of the Canadian Progress Club, the Masonic Temple, Bayview Glen Church or as president of his beloved Bayview Golf and Country Club, Tom always gave his utmost attention to every task with enthusiasm and a smile.
Some of his fondest times were with the family at the cottage in Muskoka on Skeleton Lake (there was always a long ''TO DO'' list), golfing at Bayview and Myrtle Beach, and early morning breakfasts at Table 23, served faithfully by Annie. Tom always told everyone to LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH and he surely lived by this motto.
Thank you to all the doctors and nurses at Toronto General Hospital for their care and understanding this past month.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 7 at Bayview Glen Church (Bayview and Steeles) at11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at the Bayview Golf and Country Club, 25 Fairway Heights Drive, Thornhill. Friends are welcome to visit at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street) on Tuesday, November. 6, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation of Canada or a charity of your choice.
