Tanit Ann Mendes
Mendes, Tanit Ann (Tanny) (1958-2012) - passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Grace Hospital in downtown Toronto on Wednesday, October 31 in her 54th year. Loving wife of 24 years of Rob Berry. Beloved daughter of Phyllis and the late Ross Mendes. Survived by her sisters Ngaire, partner Robert and Ngaio, husband Al, and brother North and cousins Beth Anne, Meredith and Sebastian. She leaves her niece Charlotte and nephews Colton, Noel, Liam, and Graeme. Tanit was born on October 4, 1958 in London, England. She was born into an artistic family and was destined for a dramatic life. She embarked on a career in theatre design and film and graduated from York University and the University of Toronto with a Masters of Arts. Tanit designed sets and costumes for the Shaw Festival, Sudbury Theatre, the Red Barn and Magnus Theatre among many others. Her creative talents lead her to inspire others through teaching. She taught set and costume design at Ryerson University since 1998 where her fellow faculty and students gave her the strength and support to carry on. Special thanks to the caring staff at both the Princess Margaret and Grace Hospitals. She was very brave, never complained, remained positive and felt strongly about assisting cancer research and welcomed the opportunity to advance treatments. A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, November 22 at 1:00 pm at Ryerson Theatre, 43 Gerrard St. E., followed by a reception 2:30 pm -7:00 pm at the Arts and Letters Club, 14 Elm Street. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made either to the Tanit Mendes Memorial Fund at Ryerson Theatre School (for information, please call 416-979-5086), or to Toronto's Grace Hospital.
