Jean Mary Lanchester Vale

Peacefully in Toronto Friday August 31, 2012, age 88. Jean, daughter of the late George St. John Vale (1984) and Winnifred (Reynolds) Vale (1955), sister of the late Ruth Bryde (2007). She is remembered by her niece Nöel (Bryde) Holloway, Hollywood, Florida, and by her adopted family Junsheng (John) Xu, Jianghai (Jennifer) Mei and their daughter Yang Yang Victoria Jean, Toronto, Ontario. As the oldest of the Vale grandchildren, Jean will also be remembered by her many cousins. Although she traveled widely, Jean always resided in Toronto. She was a member of the first graduating class of Lawrence Park CI (1941) and obtained an Honours B.A. in English Language and Literature from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto (1945) and subsequently an M.A. in English from the University of Toronto (1970). After serving as an editor for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (1948-61), she obtained her Specialist Certificate in English from the Ontario College of Education in 1962 and became Associate Head of English at North Toronto Collegiate and later Head of Library until her retirement in 1987. In her later years, coping with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, she resided at Four Teddington Park Retirement Home where she received excellent care. Family and friends will be received at The Trull Funeral Home & Cremation Centre (2704 Yonge Street - 5 streets south of Lawrence Avenue - 416-488-1101) on Tuesday September 4, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held in the Blessed Sacrament Church (24 Cheritan Avenue, 2 blocks south of Lawrence) on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at Trull Funeral Home. A cremation and private interment of ashes at Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
