GRANT, Robert Dunham
November 18, 1915 - August 16, 2012
'RD' passed away peacefully in his 97th year following a stroke. Predeceased by his wife of 58 years Marion (Marnie) he leaves his grateful children Richard, Daphne and Michael, their spouses Vicki, Chuck and Susan, grandchildren Fabian, Richard, Tim, McKenzie and Michael, and a great grandchild, Jean-Pierre. After distinguished service overseas, landing in the first wave on Juno Beach with the Fort Gary Horse Armoured Regiment, 'RD' returned to Canada to woo and wed Marnie, begin his family, and purchase Overland Express Limited, then a small trucking company headquartered in Woodstock. Under his leadership Overland prospered, eventually becoming Overland Western Limited, listed on the TSX. A competitive and successful skipper, and an enthusiastic squash and tennis player, 'RD' retired in 1973 to pursue his passion for sailing. Following several seasons campaigning 'Discovery' he and Marnie enjoyed many years cruising Georgian Bay and exploring various routes to and from winter berths in Florida in 'To Windward' and 'Somersault'. A tireless promoter of the sport he loved and the country in which he spent his life, a man of resonant integrity, we wish him fair winds, clear skies, reunion with his Mate, and when needed, congenial and capable crew. At his direction there will be no memorial service.
