Andrew Terence Van der Gugten
July 13, 1970 – August 7, 2012
Suddenly, the world is a slightly lesser place as we say a heartfelt farewell to our son, brother, friend and colleague Andrew van der Gugten who passed away after a brief illness. His smile, energy and quick mind will be missed. Andrew was born in Winnipeg on July 13, 1970 to his loving parents Peter and Yvonne; joining his older brother David. His formative years were spent in Fort St. John, B. C. where he shared his parents' love of the outdoors and particularly his father's love of sailing. Our memories recall a man of character who placed a high premium on hard work and friendship. His energetic spirit was only surpassed by his keen mind, quick wit and caring nature, all of which endeared him to those whose lives he touched. Andrew will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues. Andrew's work in the pharmaceutical industry began soon after his graduation from the University of Victoria in 1996. Because of his talent and initiative, Andrew quickly rose in his career with the B. C. Government to take on increasingly senior roles culminating with his position of Executive Director, National Pharmaceuticals Strategy Secretariat where he forged many deep and lasting friendships as Co-chair of the NPS task group. After securing his MBA from Queens University in 2005, Andrew joined ratiopharm Canada as Head of Market Access where he led ratiopharm and the entire Generic Pharmaceutical Industry during one of its most contentious periods. His hard work and dedication lead to many successes, both at ratiopharm and Teva Canada as Vice President, Government Affairs & Market Access. Ever eager to take on new challenges, Andrew accepted the role of Vice President, Sales with Cobalt Pharmaceuticals in 2011. In lieu of a memorial service, his family requests that a donation to the Disabled Sailing Association of Vancouver in Andrew's memory be considered.
