ECKLER, Samuel
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sam Eckler, at the age of 97, on Thursday, July 26, 2012. Beloved husband of the late Beulah Eckler. Loving father and father-in-law of Jim and Kaitlin, and John and Lori. Dear brother of the late Alec. He leaves his sisters-in-law Esther Ratinoff and Jean James. Devoted grandfather of Allison Carr and Josh Eckler, Courtney and Brian Brater, Abby and Charlotte Eckler, and great-grandfather of Dylan Bayla. Sam was a consummate gentleman respected by all. He was the founder of Canada's pre- eminent actuarial consulting practice, Eckler Limited. In the community, he was a committed volunteer and leader in numerous philanthropic organizations. Sam was a committed golfer, spectacular skier well into his 80's, and an avid swimmer. He was a world traveller, and voracious reader of a wide range of topics concerning the human condition. He was a true Olympian in spirit with integrity, compassion, and intellect. A very special thanks to his dedicated caregivers Jenny and Editha, and to the amazing Dr. Andrew Smaggus at Sunnybrook. Service was held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Sunday, July 29th at 2:30 p.m. Interment in the Chaverim Society section of Pardes Shalom Cemetery. Shiva at 554 Castlefield Avenue with visits Monday and Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to The University of Toronto, in memory of Sam Eckler, 21 King's College Circle, Toronto, ONT, M5S 3J3 416-978-0811 or www.donate.utoronto.ca
