DEREK HALLIDAY MATHER
January 14, 1933 – June 21, 2012
Derek H. Mather died at home in Vancouver, BC. He leaves behind Tere, his remarkable wife of almost 50 years, best friend, outstanding caregiver and mother, their two children Ian (Merina) and Luisa (Boris), two of the finest children a father could wish for. Their children, Isabelle (Ian), Enrique and Adriana (Luisa) brought him great happiness. He also leaves behind his brother David, nephew Charles and niece Tania. He was predeceased by his brother Graeme.
Derek studied Economics at McGill University and in 1962 he married Tere and began a wonderful life together in Montreal, which included the birth of their children, many extraordinary friendships and the beginning of his career in finance and venture capital.
They moved to Edmonton in 1983 where he was appointed CEO and director of Vencap Equities Alberta Ltd., a venture capital firm. The years at the firm were challenging ones but rewarding ones as well, thanks to a great team of colleagues.
In 1991, they moved to Vancouver and enjoyed many wonderful years there. They made many good friends, some new and some old ones from the years Derek spent growing up in Vancouver in the 1930's and 40's. He worked with the Vancouver technology industry to help start and develop services and education initiatives and also became involved in various charitable organizations.
He loved to travel. Less than a month ago, he was able to take one last great trip with Tere to Madrid, Spain, the city where she grew up and where they renewed several special friendships.
Derek believed that each day was a gift and that one should ''make way for others as others have made way for you''.
The family would like to thank Dr. Barbara Davis, the staff at VGH, the doctors at the BC Cancer Agency, Dr. Paul Sugar, VCH-North Shore Home & Community Care and Evergreen Agency for their exceptional care. In memoriam, donations can be made to Lion's Gate Hospital Foundation: Linda Leslie Nursing Education Fund or any of the other organizations listed above.
There will be a funeral mass on Thursday, June 28th at 5:00 p.m. at St. Anthony's Church, 2347 Inglewood Avenue, West Vancouver, BC, V7V 1Z9.
