GODFREY PALMER
May 22, 1926 – June 16, 2012
Born in Newcastle, Staffordshire, England, youngest of the four sons of Joseph S. and Edith Mary (Hamlett) Palmer (J.W. Leonard, Joseph, Clifford and Godfrey), all of them now deceased. In September 1942, began Naval Officer Training as a Cadet, Royal Naval Reserve, in H.M.S. 'Conway'. His parents' support and affection in the early days of Godfrey's naval career was generously given. In September 1944, joined Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. In S.S. 'Empress of Scotland' and met his future wife, Leading Wren Patricia Barrington, as they were passing through the Suez Canal on the way to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) when she was in Combined Operations. Qualified as Foreign- Going Master Mariner in 1952. Emigrated to Toronto in 1957 and joined investment dealer Equitable Securities; ultimately with Burns Fry for 25 years prior to early retirement in 1988. A long-time member of The Ontario Club from 1964 (President 1974) to amalgamation with The National Club in 2010.
He is survived by his loving wife Patricia of 63 years. Four children, Miles (Eileen) of Calgary, Guy (Shirley) of Niagara Falls, Mirabel (Gary) of Toronto, and Jill of Toronto, who have been a great source of pride and loving support. Godfrey was happiest when surrounded by his family, including his six grandchildren, Nathan, Ben and Chloe, Connor and Charlie, and Erin.
Since 1965, the family has enjoyed many happy times at Caledon Ski Club and 'Dickies Meadow'.
The family thanks St. Michael's Hospital for their outstanding care.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of St. James-the-Less, 635 Parliament St. (north of Wellesley St.), on Wednesday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. W. (2 stoplights west of Yonge St.).
