December 1, 1916 – April 19, 2011At 94, after a full and varied life and gracious coping in recent years, Emmanuel Maynard Gertler, Order of Canada, husband, father of five sons, scholar and university teacher, publisher, farmer, defender of Canadian unity, public servant, civil libertarian, peace and human rights advocate, environmentalist, and athlete, passed away at the Montreal General Hospital.
He leaves behind his saddened and proud family: his wife of 68 years, Ann Straus Gertler, his sons (and daughters-in-law) Michael Eden Gertler (JoAnn Jaffe), Jeffrey Lee Gertler (d. 2005) (Ann Stewart Gertler), Alfred Stieglitz Gertler (Katherine MacRae) (Sarah Roebuck), Franklin Straus Gertler (Catherine Oliver), Edward Hart Gertler (Mary-Jo Lough), special family Doris Winkler, his grandchildren Marin Lee Gertler, Joshua Nevin Gertler, Maxim Gabriel Gertler-Jaffe, Jardena Ciera Gertler- Jaffe, William Scott Gertler, Leo Frederick Gertler, Theodore Luke Gertler Roebuck, Nicholas Oliver Gertler, John Nathaniel Gertler and great-grandson Adrian Lee Gertler, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Hyman and Gertrude (Slover) Gertler, his sister Anna (Berger) Fine, his brother-in-law Bernard Berger, his brother Leonard Gertler and sister-in- law Anita (Birnbaum) Gertler, his mother-in-law Flora Stieglitz Straus, and father-in-law Hugh Grant Straus. We give special thanks to Laura Ford for many years of good-humoured management of everything, and to all of the caregivers and medical staff for humane and professional attention.
