Pittsford, New York. Died peacefully, August 1, 2010 at the age of 96, surrounded by her loving caregivers. Born in Toronto on October 30, 1913, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Susan Rae van der Stricht; grandson, John Paul van der Stricht; brother-in-law, Jean van der Stricht (Brussels, Belgium); sister-in- law, Diana Eaton (Toronto, Ontario); and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, Robert Y. and Hazel Eaton, predecease her, as well as her husband, Paul van der Stricht; and her son, Robert van der Stricht.
From a young age, Nora was educated around the world at several schools in Canada, England, Italy and France. During World War II she aided the Allied effort by working with Canadian Red Cross in London. Following the war, she and her husband returned to New York City, eventually settling in Greenwich, CT. Before moving to Pittsford, NY to be closer to her family in 2005, Nora was a constant presence on the bridge tables and tennis courts at the Greenwich Field Club, as well as an active member of First Presbyterian Church. A lifelong devotee to the natural world, Nora was an enthusiastic equestrian, an avid bird watcher, and a longtime patron and advocate of wilderness conservation. Her family and friends will miss her wit, wisdom, and candor.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs Street, Rochester, NY 14607.
