BORN FEBRUARY 2, 1956 IN MONTREAL, QUEBEC, DIED DECEMBER 16, 2009 IN TORONTO, ONTARIO. GREGORY CHARLES WILKINS Gregory Charles Wilkins passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, at Toronto General Hospital following a valiant 21 month battle with brain cancer. He was 53. Beloved husband of 31 years to Vera. Loving dad of Mark and Lauren. Brother to Valorie Wilkins and uncle to Patti Reed. Fondly remembered by members of his extended family. Greg distinguished himself as a leader in Canadian business, working in partnership with his long-time friend and mentor, Peter Munk, beginning in 1981. Greg also had deep respect for the leadership and integrity of the late Bob Smith, president of Barrick Gold. During his own career Greg held many roles at Barrick, including Chief Financial Officer. He became a member of the Board of Directors in 1991. In 1993, Greg was appointed Pr esident and COO of Horsham Corp., then Bar rick's controlling shareholder. Horsham later became TrizecHahn, where Greg ser ved as President and COO. He returned to Barrick in 2003 as President and CEO. As President and CEO, Greg led the company through a period of sustained growth. He oversaw the company's US$10 billion acquisition of Placer Dome in 2006, one of the most significant corporate acquisitions in Canadian business history. Greg was named Executive Vice Chairman of Barrick in July 2008. He was a Chartered Accountant and held a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University in Montreal (1977). Away from the office, Greg had a passion for cars and was a skilled racecar driver himself. He shared his passion for car racing with his son Mark. They spent over a decade at the track, and placed 3rd in class together at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2004. Greg was an avid cottager who enjoyed snowmobiling, waterskiing and boating. He was also an accomplished golfer and snow skier. In the many facets of his life, Greg developed strong friendships, in which he took great pride. The Wilkins family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ber nar d Gos evi tz for his fri end shi p and gui dan ce, as wel l as Dr. Mark Bernstein at Toronto Western Hospital, Dr. Warren Mason and his team at Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. Alfred Yung and his associates at the MD Anderson Clinic in Houston, Texas and the doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Peter Munk for his compassion and unyielding support, as well as the entire Barrick family, for keeping Greg in their thoughts and prayers always. Visitation will be held at the VISITAT ION CENTRE at MOUNT PLEASAN T CEMETER Y, 375 Mount Pleasant Ro ad (east gate entrance), Toronto, 416-485-5572 on Monday, December 21 from 5 to 8 pm. A memorial ser vice will be held at the Visitation Centre Chapel on Tuesday, December 22 at 11 am.
