At the open: Commodities come back
North American stocks rose at the start of trading on Thursday, driven by higher commodity prices and a benign U.S. report on jobless claims for last week. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 12 points or 0.1 per cent, to 8688. The broader S&P 500 rose 3 points or 0.3 per cent, to 935. Financials were higher. Citigroup Inc. rose 2.1 per cent and Bank of America Corp. rose 1.3 per cent. Intel Corp. rose 1.6 per cent.
